There was the sound of passengers in the airport lobby. Although it wasn’t really loud or noisy, one couldn’t help but hear other people; it was unclear, just a little bit above a hum. With a toddler in her arms and another youngster in her other hand, 9-year-old Gabby led the way while her mother, Erica, trailed behind. Their luggage was being pushed on the slick floor by an airport staff member who was right behind them.
Gabby held her teddy bear close to her chest as she walked and peered around nervously. Despite her heart’s constant pounding, she continued to move. Her fear stemmed from the fact that she was aware of her location and the meaning of an airport. Gabby was powerless to move as her feet slowed down on their own as they got closer to the counter so Erica could start finalizing their journey, reminding her of what she had told her at home.
Her mother paused next to her. She had assured Gabby that she wouldn’t let anything happen to her and that everything would be okay. Additionally, she assured Gabby that the flight wouldn’t last long and would end before she knew it. Gabby turned to face her mother. She obviously didn’t trust her mother, but it was their turn at that moment. The processing started when Erica stepped forward to the counter. Gabby stayed with her brothers and kept an eye on them as she waited for her mother.
Erica finished the process in a matter of minutes, and the family was prepared for boarding. Similar to the reservation, the boarding procedure was quick. But Gabby’s feet appeared to get heavier as she became more anxious with each step they made in the direction of the jet. They finally boarded the plane after she remained silent and clung to her teddy like a lifeline.
They couldn’t sit in the same spot since there were four of them. Gabby occupied the seat across from Erica, who was seated with the other two kids. That didn’t sit well with Erica. Although she would have liked to have Gabby nearby in case of an emergency, she was powerless to do so. Compared to Gabby, the other two kids were younger and required more of her attention. But at least she could see Gabby clearly, and she was happy about that. It meant that she could keep a careful eye on Gabby’s health.
Unfortunately, Gabby’s condition didn’t improve. As the announcement started over the PA, she tightly closed her eyes and grasped the arms of her seat. She had to push herself to be quiet as the plane’s engine started because she was so terrified. Knowing that her mother was occupied with her brothers, she didn’t want to wake her up. As the jet started to accelerate and taxi along the tarmac, her panic became stuck in her throat. Her breathing became more rapid, and Gabby was unaware that she had let out a scream the moment the jet took off.
She was screaming and holding on to the seat tightly. When Erica turned to face her, she was shocked to see how terrified her daughter was. Erica immediately dismissed the idea of going to save Gabby, which was her first thought. She felt compelled to stay in her seat as she was aware of the risks of moving while the aircraft was ascending into the sky.
Gabby was increasingly agitated as the plane continued to ascend. Gabby felt as though the plane’s walls were closing in on her. Her ears were ringing, and her breath was coming in short gasps. It wasn’t made any easier by the fact that everyone was gazing at her. She only waited for the jet to eventually break through the clouds and reach cruising altitude. She was still breathing rapidly and forcefully, but her frenzied shrieking had ceased by the time the jet was stable in the air.
As soon as it was safe to do so, Erica sprung from her chair like it had caught fire and headed for her daughter. She attempted to console Gabby by taking her hand in hers. Squeezing her hand, Gabby pleaded with Erica to hold on. If her mother left her alone, she didn’t believe she could cope. Erica vowed never to abandon her. But she had no idea that she would soon be forced to break that vow due to fate.
Her other two kids started crying. They needed her, too. They wanted her back after noticing that she was solely spending time with Gabby. She first made an effort to ignore them, but as the minutes went by, their screams became louder and more disruptive to the other passengers. Erica had no choice but to release Gabby’s hand and quickly return to her other two children.
Gabby attempted to reclaim her mother’s hand as it slid out of her own, but all she could do was clutch at nothing. She was horrified to see her mother cross the aisle and start comforting her two siblings. Gradually, Gabby sensed her terror rising once again. She was reminded of how high in the sky she was and how deadly everything felt as she peered out the window nearest her and saw the clouds swirling ominously around the jet.
Her breathing soon became labored. She had trouble breathing as if her nostrils had been partially blocked. She wanted to scream, but she restrained herself. She knew her mom was busy with her siblings and didn’t want to bother her, so she agreed to tackle things by herself. However, she struggled to manage her anxiety on her own. Just as before, she attempted to block out the noises of the jet and the faint tremor of the aircraft by closing her eyes. She was prepared to remain there till they reached their target.
But all of a sudden, a warm hand touched hers. The hand made a soft landing and remained there steadily. She opened her eyes as a result, and to her surprise, a man was standing next to her, grinning broadly. She recognized him as a flight attendant from his attire. For a while, she wondered what he wanted from her. He asked her if he might sit next to her in the vacant seat, still grinning. He sank into the chair as she gave him a slow nod.
He then identified himself as Garrick Riley and expressed his regret that her mother was unable to support her because of her two brothers’ needs. Knowing all of that, Gabby assured him that she was also taking care not to stress her mother so that she could concentrate on the two kids. Garrick then reassured her that everything would be well and said he was there for her. She gave him another glance. He continued to smile pleasantly, and his soft demeanor made everything he said seem so plausible.
She simply felt that she would be able to get through this panic episode and make it through the flight if she followed his instructions. After giving it some thought, she made the decision to fully trust him and follow his instructions. Then, as though losing his hand would make her less likely to live, she clung to it. She had no idea, though, that this choice would completely upend her life in ways she could never have predicted.
Her respiration was still rapid and labored, but it had lessened. Garrick realized that in order for her to improve her breathing control, she needed to distract herself from the panic episode. In order to divert her attention, he chose to talk to her. “Tell me about yourself,” he prompted Gabby. She did so with pleasure.
Despite having never taken a trip before, Gabby had been afraid of airplanes for a few years. Her parents, however, were aware of her flying phobia and made every effort to keep her off of airplanes. Gabby’s aunt, Erica’s sister, used to care for her when she was a youngster with type 1 diabetes. Gabby regularly sought therapy at her aunt’s hospital, where she worked as a nurse. Her aunt constantly took care of her mental health, whether she was at home or in the hospital. As a result, they got close, with Gabby seeing her aunt as a representation of life and health. She was confident that seeing her aunt would help her feel better, regardless of how sick she was.
Her aunt was all the more lovable after Erica told her a terrifying story. The only person Erica could contact after going into preterm labor during a violent rainstorm while pregnant with Gabby was Gabby’s aunt, who immediately came racing. Her aunt performed the birth at the house itself. Over the years, Gabby and her aunt became closer and closer as a result of this narrative.
However, on the eve of her sixth birthday, things tragically changed. Her aunt’s chopper crashed after losing its engine when she was traveling over to celebrate Gabby’s birthday with her family. Gabby was still able to recall the exact moment she was told the news. She had been eagerly awaiting her aunt’s arrival on her birthday while they were getting ready for the celebration. The first time Erica told her, Gabby was shocked. Her aunt’s absence from her birthday celebration didn’t make sense. She assured her mother that her aunt would still be visiting, so she didn’t need to worry. She couldn’t accept that her favorite aunt in the world wouldn’t be arriving.
But as the hours passed, and her aunt was still nowhere to be seen, along with the somber mood that had descended on the home, it gradually dawned on her that perhaps her aunt was not actually arriving. When her parents informed her that her aunt had perished in a helicopter accident, she instantly started to fear that if she ever boarded an aircraft, she would perish like her aunt. She experienced dreams for a long time following the death of her aunt in which she was on a plane or a helicopter flight that always ended in a crash.
Erica and her husband had to take her to a psychiatrist because it was that awful. However, she eventually healed sufficiently to carry on with her life. She still had a fear of flying, though. Because of her dread, her parents agreed she would never board a plane. Almost every family vacation they had, regardless of distance, was a road trip. Since the majority of the excursions were domestic, they were often simple to arrange.
They all had to do things they wouldn’t have ordinarily done, though, because things took a turn they couldn’t have predicted. After losing his job, Gabby’s father found it more difficult to find another one. Despite his best efforts, he was unable to obtain anything substantial until he started attempting to find employment prospects abroad. Although it was excellent news, he received a job abroad, which meant they had to move. And this was not a journey that could be completed on land. They had to take to the skies. Gabby was ready to board a plane for the first time, and they knew it wouldn’t be a smooth ride for her.
They were supposed to go together, but he had to stay behind due to an issue that arose the day before their trip. He was certain they would never return, so he had a lot of finishing touches to add. Erica was thus compelled to accompany the children alone. It was difficult for her to help Gabby when she needed it because her two younger children were already a handful in their own manner. She was really appreciative of Garrick’s decision to take control of the situation and console her because of this.
He was doing a fantastic job at it so far. They were speaking openly to one another. They were riding together, but separately, and she filled him in on her family and their dogs. She was informed by Garrick that he had a daughter at a similar age. That, he claimed, was the primary factor that attracted him to her.
A massive tremor rocked the plane as they were talking, making it quiver everywhere. As the jet continued to tremble, Gabby instinctively grasped his hands once again and held them tightly. Over the public address system, the pilot’s voice said that they had encountered turbulence and instructed everyone to stay seated and fasten their seat belts. The plane was buffeted from all sides and continued to tremble.
Gabby’s thoughts were solely focused on the death of her beloved aunt. She could see that all of her nightmares were coming true as she recalled them. She should never have boarded the aircraft. She experienced a full-blown panic attack, causing her cheeks to flush and her breath to catch in her chest.
Garrick gave her hand a firm squeeze, making her turn to face him. After that, he put his free hand on her back and started massaging it. He advised her to take precise, calm breaths. The sound might benefit her. So he advised her to open her lips and breathe as loudly as she could. She did as he said. As his words diverted her attention, he continued to speak to her, his voice settling in her ears like a soothing hum. He then instructed her to concentrate on her siblings and Erica. They were afraid for her since they were her family. They must have kept her safe.
Garrick continued to stroke her on the back and encourage her as Gabby began to breathe loudly and take long breaths in and out. Soon, her attention was so concentrated on taking deep breaths that she didn’t even realize when he had stopped. She repeatedly did it because it was effective. The plane had cleared the turbulence and was once again stable in the air when she realized she was okay. Garrick gave her another warm grin and congratulated her on overcoming her panic episode. Impressed by her accomplishments, she returned his smile. She thanked him for his assistance, though, as she knew she could not have done it without him.
Now that the turbulence had subsided, Gabby’s next anticipation was the plane’s landing. She was surprised to find that she managed it better than she had during the takeoff. She just closed her eyes and repeatedly inhaled loud, deep breaths until the jet landed and taxied to a stop down the runway.
The other passengers applauded when Garrick stated over the public address system that Gabby had overcome her fear of flying following the flight’s safe landing. Her blood sugar had plummeted as a result of the fear she had experienced during the journey, so he hurried to buy her some orange juice. Erica gave Garrick a heartfelt thank you for helping her look after Gabby as they were leaving the aircraft. If he hadn’t intervened, she claimed things would have gone horribly wrong, but Garrick assured her that he was just carrying out his duties.
Erica was extremely appreciative of him since she knew he had gone above and beyond to ensure her kid was safe. Before leaving with her mother, Gabby gave him a firm embrace and expressed her gratitude to him as well. But Erica was unable to conceal such a noble deed. She posted on Facebook about the helpful flight attendant who had assisted her daughter during a panic attack after she and her kids had moved into their new house and were waiting for their father and spouse to join them.
When the post went viral, everyone was praising the kind attendant and saying that the world needs more people like him. The tale gained so much popularity that publications and websites discussed it and conducted interviews with all those involved. All Garrick could think of was that Gabby was safe and that she had managed to overcome her phobia of flying. He felt glad to have played a part in her finding peace. He hadn’t done it to gain attention. He had just chosen to assist someone in need after seeing them in need. He was forever thankful to Erica and Gabby.
They had no doubt that his altruistic deeds on that airliner would live on in history. He helped Gabby overcome her fear of flying. She already knew what to do in case she ever experienced a panic attack while flying. She would be eternally thankful to him for that reason alone. He will always be remembered by her and her mother.
Over the years, the two families remained in contact as they got past the incident. Erica and her husband were always searching for the man who had saved their kid whenever they went to the airport.
