They Thought Distance Covered Their Tracks: How Toll Booth Data Cracked a Killer’s Alibi.
Workers couldn’t believe the news. Waitress Erica Sharpton, or Megan as they called her, was murdered. Sheriff Tim Fuller says deputies discovered Sharpton’s body in this grass on fire early Monday morning. After putting out the flames, they discovered evidence of trauma to her head. A mother pleads with law enforcement to catch her daughter’s killer before she says someone else gets hurt.
I wake up in the morning with a horrible realization that my daughter is dead. And she’s never coming back. Megan Sharpton was brutally murdered on July 2nd after she was lured to a home. She was raped several times and beaten. Her body was found burning on the side of the road in Franklin County. July 1st, 2012, Tullahoma, Tennessee. 24-year-old Megan Sharpton tells her family she might have a new job opportunity.
Um she explains that a man called her and said he was looking for someone to take care of his grandmother. According to him, Naomi had recommended Megan for the job. Now, Megan was studying to become a nurse and she was only about 2 months away from graduating. So, this job sounded like a really good chance to get some hands-on experience.
She agreed to meet him. That evening turned out to be the last time anyone heard Megan alive. Later that night, Megan suddenly stops answering her phone. She never comes back home. And honestly, no one even knows if she ever made it to that supposed interview. A few hours later, at about 1:20 in the morning on July 2nd, two teenagers are driving along Awalt Road.
It’s a quiet, remote road surrounded by trees, far away from any houses. As they’re driving, they notice something strange. There’s a fire burning in the woods. The teenagers call emergency services thinking it might be a forest fire. But when firefighters arrive at the scene, they realize something almost immediately.
This fire wasn’t an accident. Um it had been started on purpose. Like someone lit that fire to destroy a body. The body of a young woman. Later, police confirm her identity. It’s Megan Sharpton. When she was found, she had no ID, no phone, no keys, no purse. There was no car nearby. No one else around. She was naked from the waist down.
Her skull had been severely deformed from repeated blows. Investigators quickly discover another detail. She was already dead when the fire was started. Later, the autopsy reveals the full picture. Megan had been raped. After that, she was brutally beaten. She was shot in the cheek. And that gunshot was the actual cause of her death.
But it didn’t end there. Her body was taken to a remote road. And there, um it was set on fire in an attempt to destroy the evidence. All while Megan’s family didn’t even know she was missing yet. The investigation begins with the people closest to her. Police question her partner, Chris. They speak with her friends.
They check with her roommate. Inside the apartment, investigators find blood in the bathroom and several syringes. But none of them are connected to the murder. Then a new detail appears. Police locate Megan’s car, a red Ford Mustang. Inside the vehicle, they find a handwritten note. An address.
And like very detailed directions explaining exactly how to get there, 850 Shelfer Road. The problem was that address didn’t actually exist. Investigators soon came to a disturbing conclusion. Someone had deliberately created a fake address to lure Megan into a secluded place. So detectives turned their attention to the phone call Megan received right before she disappeared.
The man on the phone had told her that Naomi recommended her for the job. But, when police finally tracked down Naomi, she tells them something completely different. She had never recommended Megan. In fact, um she barely even knew her. And that could only mean one thing. Someone had used Naomi’s name to gain Megan’s trust.
At that point, the investigation kind of hits a dead end. Weeks go by without a clear suspect. Then, after a few weeks, a new piece of evidence appears. Police locate the phone that was used to make that call. It turns out to be a prepaid phone. A phone that was purchased specifically for this purpose.
Security cameras inside the store show the man who bought it. While paying for the phone, he placed his own personal phone on the counter. And just like that, he unknowingly gives police their first real lead. Before long, investigators identify him. His name is Timothy Timmy Gifford. But, Timmy quickly tells detectives he didn’t buy the phone for himself.
He says he bought it for a friend. A man named Donnie Frank Jones, Jr. And right at that moment, the investigation finally begins to fall into place. Donnie Jones is a man with a criminal past. And he also happens to be the husband of that same Naomi whose name was used to lure Megan. From there, investigators start uncovering even more evidence.
DNA, phone records, cell phone movement data, and a route that connects three key locations. The place where Megan was abducted, the place where she was murdered, and the place where her body was found. Every single one of those points leads back to the same person. Donnie Frank Jones, Jr. But, the way he chose Megan, and the way he planned this crime, turns out to be even colder and more calculated than investigators first believed.
So, to really understand what happened, we have to go all the way back to the beginning of this story. All right, friends. Um let me pause for just a minute. I’m actually really curious about something. I’d love to know where my audience is watching from. So, if you have a second, tell me what city you’re in and what time it is for you right now.
Thanks so much for taking a moment to do that. Go ahead and drop it in the comments. And now, let’s keep going. Tullahoma, Tennessee, a little more than an hour south of Nashville. People who live in Tullahoma would probably describe it as a quiet, comfortable town. The kind of place where most people know each other and the community is pretty close-knit.
Back in 2012, a 24-year-old woman named Erica Megan Sharpston lived there. Now, Erica usually went by Megan. She came from a big family that had moved around a bit before finally settling down in Tullahoma. Everyone who knew her said she was incredibly hard-working and really focused on her goals. Her best friend described Megan as someone who was fun, outgoing, and always trying to grow and improve herself.
At that time, Megan was just 2 months away from finishing school. A promising career in nursing was right in front of her. She was almost always busy, but honestly, that’s exactly how she liked it. She worked part-time as a waitress at a local steakhouse and also had a job at a nursing home. Megan had been living with her partner Chris for about 3 years, and people around them often said that in many ways her life seemed to be falling perfectly into place.
On July 1st, Megan planned to visit her mom’s house so she could see her sister who had come into town from another city. But not long after they made plans for dinner, Megan called her mom, Kelly, and explained that something had come up at the last minute. She had just gotten an opportunity to go to a job interview, so she needed to move their dinner to another time.
Um, she sounded really excited. She even said that if she got the job, they might give her an advance payment right away. Megan was the kind of person who always worked hard and kept pushing forward, so her family was genuinely happy for her. They wished her good luck and said they’d see her later. But as the hours passed, neither her family, her friends, nor her partner Chris heard anything about how the interview went.
Megan had completely disappeared from the radar. She wasn’t answering calls. She wasn’t replying to messages. Soon, it was already midnight. Then the next day began, and people started wondering if the interview had gone well. They kept hoping she would reach out soon and let everyone know she was okay. That day had been extremely hot and dry, and in the early morning hours, a pair of teenagers driving along Allwalt Road accidentally noticed something strange, a fire burning among the trees.
This area was very isolated and rarely traveled. The closest building, a small church, was about half a mile away, and the nearest house was far on the other side of a bridge. Honestly, it wasn’t the kind of road where people usually stop. It was more like a place you simply drive through.
The teenagers called emergency services, thinking a forest fire might have started, and they were worried it could spread. Rescue crews arrived not long after and immediately began working to put out the fire, which had already spread across a fairly large area. At first, res- responders thought it might have been an unattended campfire, or maybe a cigarette someone had tossed aside.
But they didn’t need to get very close to realize something was terribly wrong. This fire had been started deliberately. It had been set to try to burn a body, the body of Megan Sharpton. There was no vehicle nearby and no one else around the scene. Megan had no identification on her. No keys, no purse, no phone, and none of those items were found nearby, either.
She was naked from the waist down. And the burn patterns at the scene confirmed something disturbing. She had already been dead before the fire was started. One of the officers immediately noticed the severity of the injuries to her head. Her skull had been badly deformed from repeated blows. Because she had no identification with her and there were no recent missing person reports that could help identify her, police were left without clear answers at first.
However, investigators did notice a distinctive detail. She was wearing a t-shirt that suggested she was a medical student. And she also had several tattoos. So, police were able to release a general description to the public. And the information began spreading quickly. Then, after a Facebook post appeared describing a young woman with star-shaped tattoos who had been found, Megan’s mother, Kelly, contacted the police.
Megan had star tattoos on her ankle, each one symbolizing one of her brothers and sisters, and she also had another tattoo on her neck. And just from those details, Kelly immediately realized the victim was her daughter. It was brutal. It was shocking. And the entire community was suddenly filled with fear.
Workers couldn’t believe the news. Waitress Erica Sharpton, or Megan as they called her, was murdered. We’re all just shocked because she never seemed like she was in any kind of trouble. Friends say Sharpton was a busy 24-year-old who was balancing this job with nursing school and another job at a nursing home. To try and get out of the restaurant business and get into a better career field, you know, where she can make a salary.
The young lady’s body was over here. Sheriff Tim Fuller says deputies discovered Sharpton’s body in this grass on fire early Monday morning. After putting out the flames, they discovered evidence of trauma to her head. It appears to us that that she may have very well been murdered at another location and was literally dumped here to dispose of the body.
Could she have been killed on her way home after the interview? Or did she even make it to that interview at all? Was the person who arranged the interview actually her killer? Or was this something completely different, an attack that had nothing to do with it? Joining us now is Kelly Sharpton. I’m sure this has just been so difficult for you and your family.
Our prayers go out to you. How did you find out what happened to your beautiful daughter? I actually read a post on Facebook where they had described a girl with a star tattoo on the back of her neck and I knew when I read it that it was her. And I knew that it was her. When was the last time you talked to your daughter and what kind of mood was she in? I understand she was saying that she was going to go over and visit a family, correct? Right.
Um my other daughter was here from out of town and she had just woken up at 3:45 that afternoon. She’d worked the late shift at the restaurant where she worked and was planning to come over after that. She said after she got her shower, she would come on and um she didn’t come. But we were under the understanding she had an interview with somebody to start sitting with an elderly lady.
And so we just figured she had and gone on and gone to that interview, but we lost track of her after that. If somebody’s out there listening tonight and they saw something, what would you like to say to them as you are desperately searching for clues for your daughter? Just please, if you saw anything, even the smallest detail, please call the police.
Call TBI or Franklin County Sheriff’s Department. They’ve been wonderful. They’ve kept us up to date. They’ve left no stone unturned. They’ve just been great and please call. She was our daughter our sister. We just miss her. Police started the investigation with the people who had been closest to Megan. One of the first people they looked at was her partner, Chris.
Her family later admitted that investigators briefly questioned him as well. Their relationship had been on and off for a while and Megan’s sister later said that “Mhm, the first thought that crossed her mind was that he might somehow be involved.” She described She described the relationship as like oil and water.
They clearly didn’t mix very well and their relationship definitely had its ups and downs. Chris told investigators that the last time he tried to call Megan, she didn’t answer. When she didn’t come back to their apartment that night, he simply assumed she had decided to stay at her mother’s place. During a search of the apartment, investigators found blood in the bathroom along with several syringes.
That was enough for police to bring Chris and his roommate Robbie in for further questioning. While detectives were still interviewing them, Megan’s car was discovered a 1995 red Ford Mustang. Investigators found Sharpton’s ’95 red Ford Mustang 15 miles away on Three Forks Bridge Road in Bedford County.
They’re now asking the public for any information how it got there and whether anyone has seen the woman’s pink purse. Those two pieces of information will be very very valuable to us. Inside the car, investigators found a handwritten note with an address and directions explaining how to get there.
850 Shelfer Road. There was no blood inside the vehicle and other than that note, there wasn’t really anything in the car that had clear evidentiary value. But there was a problem. That address didn’t exist. So, police came to the conclusion that it was probably used to lure Megan somewhere. Meanwhile, back at the police station, Robbie admitted that the drug-related items found in the apartment belonged to him.
He said he had been struggling with the problem on his own and that neither Chris nor Megan knew about his drug use. Robbie also told investigators something else. He admitted that he and Megan had been involved in a secret relationship. That immediately made detectives wonder, could Chris have found out about it and killed her in a fit of rage? But Chris had no idea about the relationship.
And when he heard about it, he was visibly shocked. He admitted that his relationship with Megan had its problems, but officers later said he was clearly devastated. His hands were shaking and he looked completely broken when he learned that she had died. That reaction, combined with a solid alibi from his workplace, ruled him out as a suspect.
Robbie, on the other hand, couldn’t provide a clear alibi. However, phone records showed that he had been texting Megan throughout the night and even into the early morning hours, asking where she was and if she was okay. Investigators eventually confirmed that he had nothing to do with her murder. But Chris did give police one important lead.
On the day Megan disappeared, a man had called one of her phones. He said he was looking for someone to take care of his grandmother and he claimed that Naomi had recommended Megan. Now, Megan had really wanted more hands-on experience in the field she was about to enter and this sounded like the perfect opportunity.
That was the mysterious job she had been so excited about telling everyone. But this was the first time anyone had heard a name connected to that offer. The only Naomi Chris knew was someone who had studied with Megan the previous year. So police decided to follow up on that lead. But while they were working on it, something else suddenly caught their attention.
Besides the name Naomi, another detail started to weigh heavily on investigators’ minds. Just 6 months earlier, a very high-profile disappearance had shaken the region, the case of 20-year-old Holly Bobo. Holly was also studying to become a nurse and she had disappeared in Decatur County, about 130 miles from Tullahoma.
Detectives couldn’t help but wonder if there might be some kind of connection between her case and Megan’s. People in the community also began noticing similarities between the two young women. Soon, the media started pushing the idea that this could possibly be the work of a serial killer. And that only made the fear spreading through the community even stronger.
By process of elimination, investigators eventually identified the address of the only Naomi they believed could be connected to Megan. So, they drove out to her house. But, when officers arrived, Naomi wasn’t home. A neighbor gave them her phone number instead. When detectives finally spoke with her, they were surprised by what they heard.
Naomi said she had never recommended Megan for that job. In fact, um she said she didn’t even particularly like her. She explained that she barely knew Megan at all. The only real connection between them was that they had occasionally carpooled to classes together a few times. When investigators asked why someone might have used her name, Naomi said she had absolutely no idea.
She insisted she would never have recommended Megan for anything. Naomi told police she couldn’t help them any further. Officers left feeling confused and frustrated, because this had been the lead they were relying on the most. Sometime later, the results of Megan’s autopsy finally came in. The report revealed that she had been raped before she was beaten and then shot in the cheek.
Although the blunt force trauma to her head had been so severe that her skull was nearly crushed, it was the gunshot that ultimately caused her death. Investigators believed she had most likely been beaten with the gun itself. A mother pleads with law enforcement to catch her daughter’s killer before she says someone else gets hurt.
Good evening, I’m Kim Chapman. And I’m Calvin Sneed. The murder of Megan Sharpton happened in Franklin County back in July. The murder left her family devastated and on edge knowing her killer is still out there somewhere. I wake up in the morning with the horrible realization that my daughter is dead. And she’s coming back.
Megan Sharpton was brutally murdered on July 2nd after she was lured to a home. She was raped several times and beaten. Her body was found burning on the side of the road in Franklin County. District Attorney Michael Taylor is overseeing the case. The investigation is continuing and hopefully we will have a successful outcome in the near future.
While the murderer walks free, her family is left with a gaping hole. Kelly talks about her son’s connection with Megan. He really valued her and went to her for most of his advice and needs and he’s been devastated. Sadness and grief have overcome the mother of four who promised to support her children through college.
Megan would be graduating from nursing school on October 26th. I have to accept her diploma for her and that will be joyous. It will break my heart because it should be her. The Sharptons are pleading for District Attorney Taylor to speed up the process and make an arrest in the case so no other woman get hurt.
If you have any information on this case, call the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department. Though the phone Megan had with her that night was never found, Chris was able to locate another phone of hers, the one that had received the call about the job. At last, investigators had access to the mysterious number.
The call had come from an unregistered prepaid phone. About 12 weeks after Megan’s body was discovered, detectives finally got something concrete. The number connected to that prepaid phone led them to a store in Tullahoma where the phone had been purchased. Security cameras inside the store showed a man buying it.
At one point, he placed his own phone on the counter while paying, which made it clear that he was intentionally buying another phone, one that would be harder to trace for some reason. The cameras followed the man as he left the store. He got into a red pickup truck. Before long, investigators identified the man as Timothy Gifford, known as Timmy, a small-time drug dealer.
Police were surprised that his name might be connected to such a major case. When they tracked down the truck, it was being driven by his brother, Paul. Paul said the only thing he knew was that Timmy had bought the truck from a friend and later passed it on to him. Timmy was quickly located. He cooperated with investigators and told them he had bought the phone for a friend.
And interestingly, it was the same friend who had sold him the red truck. That friend’s name was Donnie Frank Jones Jr., a name already familiar to police. Donnie had a criminal history and had often worked as a police informant. Still, the connection between Donnie and Megan wasn’t clear yet.
Timmy explained that Donnie had recently undergone surgery and asked him to buy the phone because he couldn’t do it himself. As payment, Donnie gave Timmy some of his prescription painkillers. After that, Donnie sent Timmy a message saying he wanted to trade his truck for a Mustang and asked if Timmy could help arrange it.
Timmy said he didn’t understand why Donnie wanted to do that, since he had several small children and a truck was obviously more practical. But Timmy agreed to help and eventually passed the truck on to his brother. He also mentioned that the carpet and some other parts of the interior had recently been replaced. According to Donnie, his wife said the vehicle would probably be easier to sell if the inside looked newer.
And that’s when police finally realized the connection. Donnie Jones was married to Naomi Jones, the same Naomi whose name had been used during the phone call to Megan, and the same woman investigators had spoken with weeks earlier. Now police had the link they needed. They returned to the couple’s house, this time planning to conduct a search.
At first, Donnie denied knowing Megan. But then he suddenly changed his story and said he remembered driving her and his wife to class once or twice. Donnie claimed that on the night Megan disappeared, he had been at home with his children. He denied Timmy’s story about the phone and even told detectives they were free to search his house and take a DNA sample.
He said he had nothing to hide. Officers searched the home for some time, but didn’t find anything suspicious. Eventually, they left with only the DNA sample. While investigators waited for the test results, another painful moment arrived. The graduation ceremony at the nursing school Megan had been about to finish finally took place.
Her 18 classmates gathered to celebrate her life and honor her memory. supposed to accept her degree in practical nursing from the Tennessee Technology Center. Megan worked hard for this. She wanted this. She wanted to be a nurse. But she was on her way and her life was stolen. accepted Megan’s diploma on her behalf.
I’m not the only one that should be sad. Every patient that she would have had, [snorts] every person that she would have touched should also be. People like I am. Where she was supposed to sit was left empty. The Combined DNA Index System, better known as CODIS, is a central database that law enforcement uses to compare DNA profiles from people convicted of certain categories of crimes.
The CODIS software allows investigators at the city, state, and national level to electronically compare DNA profiles. It helps connect crimes and identify suspects when there’s a DNA match. Through that system, investigators were able to compare the DNA sample they had collected. And there was a match.
The DNA matched the evidence from the sexual assault examination conducted in Megan’s case. The DNA belonged to Donnie. He was brought in for questioning. At first, he insisted the police had made a mistake. He claimed that he and Megan had never met and had never had any kind of sexual relationship.
Then detectives showed him the DNA test results. And after that, he quickly changed his story. Questioning, Donny Jones Jr. presented his own version of what had happened. He claimed that he and Megan supposedly had a consensual sexual relationship. According to him, it was something they both agreed to, but they had decided to keep it a secret.
That explanation immediately raised serious doubts among investigators. To detectives, it sounded like an attempt to explain why his DNA was connected to Megan while also trying to distance himself from suspicion. And honestly, um even though many of them believed he was lying, at that moment they simply didn’t have enough evidence to directly prove it.
So, investigators found themselves in a difficult position. They suspected Donny wasn’t telling the truth, but legally they couldn’t disprove his claim at that time. Because of that, they were forced to let him go home, even though the suspicion surrounding him remained extremely serious. However, Donny’s past had already drawn the attention of law enforcement.
He had previously been accused of rape. In addition to that, he had prior convictions for aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, and forgery. That criminal history made him well-known within the justice system. Because of those convictions, he was also legally prohibited from possessing firearms. When police learned that Donny actually did have a gun, that discovery became an important legal basis for further action.
Investigators were able to obtain a search warrant and grounds for his arrest. That step was strategically important. Law enforcement hoped that taking him into custody would give them more time to carefully examine the evidence and investigate his possible involvement in Megan’s murder more deeply. And over time, the investigation began producing new results.
About 4 months after Megan’s body was discovered, the final pieces of evidence started to appear, the ones that would ultimately link Donny to the crime. A forensic examiner had already confirmed an important detail. They were able to determine the type of bullet that passed through Megan’s cheek. That type of bullet matched a rifle owned by Donnie.
This became one of the key elements of the evidence. But the case didn’t rely on that alone. GPS data also began forming a clearer picture. It showed that Donnie had been in several locations directly connected to the crime. In addition, mobile phone data played a crucial role. Investigators discovered that the burner phone used to contact Megan had been moving along with Donnie’s personal phone.
At the same time, both devices were being detected in the same areas. That meant the two phones were most likely very close to each other. The most logical explanation was that both phones were inside his vehicle. Cellular signals appeared in several different locations, and when investigators compared those data points, they realized something important.
The movements of the devices matched the route connected to the events of that night. Those digital traces became key pieces of the puzzle that were slowly forming a complete picture of the crime. First location was where investigators believed Megan had been abducted and attacked. The second was where they believed she was killed.
And the third was the place where her body was eventually the place where Megan was killed was a farm that belonged to Donnie’s family. And it was there that they found a partially burned scarf that belonged to Megan. Monday you know where I’m at the sheriff at approximately 6:30 p.m. A Franklin County Granger returned and got him against the tele home man for the murder of Megan Sharpton.
He has been charged with first degree murder of Megan and will face justice in our court system. This is rural middle Tennessee. We don’t We don’t see things like that here. We don’t We don’t experience that level of of brutality or violence or or just coldness. [snorts] Donnie Frank Jones Jr.
was officially charged with counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of aggravated rape, and first-degree murder. for Donnie Jones Jr. was set at $500,000. That was a substantial amount and reflected just how serious the charges against him were. Meanwhile, prosecutors began actively preparing for the upcoming trial, slowly gathering evidence and building a full picture of what had happened.
One important part of the investigation involved what’s known as a burner phone, a temporary phone that, according to investigators, Donnie had been using. When detectives analyzed the phone records, they discovered that he had called several different people from that device. And when investigators started checking those numbers, they uncovered something disturbing.
Every person he had contacted either worked in nursing or cared for elderly people. These were individuals whose jobs involved helping others and often required them to trust strangers. According to investigators, that was not a coincidence. In fact, Donnie had been calling random people he didn’t know, trying to find a potential victim.
The calls appeared to be attempts to connect with someone who might agree to meet with him. Later in the investigation, another detail surfaced. Donnie actually remembered Megan. About a year before these events, he had given her a ride in his car. So that meant he had known her before, even if the contact had been brief.
Investigators believe that was when he later remembered her as a potential target. To contact Megan, he used his wife’s phone. That’s how he obtained her number. And during the call, he introduced himself using a different name, Naomi. That name was used intentionally. According to investigators, it was meant to make Megan feel safer and more trusting.
When someone believes they’re speaking with a woman, they might feel less suspicious. After that, Donnie gave her a fake address, along with detailed directions explaining how to get there. Those directions led Megan to a remote and isolated location. That’s where he was already waiting. Phone records also helped clarify another important detail.
They confirmed that his wife Naomi was at work on the night of the crime. Police clearly stated that she had no involvement in Megan’s murder. Investigators found no evidence linking her to the crime. In addition, law enforcement also checked whether Donnie Jones Jr. might be connected to other high-profile cases.
One of those possibilities was the disappearance of Holly Bobo. However, investigators found no evidence of any connection between Donnie and Holly Bobo. Although arrests were later made in Holly Bobo’s case, those individuals were not connected to Jones. The charges against Donnie were extremely serious. They even carried the possibility of the death penalty.
However, prosecutors never publicly stated whether they planned to pursue that sentence in court. At the early stage of the legal process, Donnie Jones Jr. pleaded not guilty. Which meant the case was heading toward a full trial, one that would ultimately determine his fate. He walked into a Manchester courtroom with shackles on his hands and feet, coming face to face with Megan Sharpton’s mother Kelly, who was clutching a picture of her daughter.
Well, our theory was that the purpose of the fire was to destroy the semen present in her body. District Attorney Mike Taylor says the fire actually ended up preserving the evidence that became key after investigators linked Jones to the crime through cell phone records and Sharpton’s clothing found on his family’s property.
I know that he had a ’98 escape where he uh where he actually tried to kidnap two young ladies in the car and make them take him to the interstate. In court, Jones asked the judge for a speedy trial and he mouthed to relatives what appeared to be, “I didn’t do it.” I think he knows in his heart the universe knows he’s guilty. I don’t have to argue with him.
The police have done their work. Because the death penalty was a possible outcome, it was later reported that he was interested in making a deal with prosecutors. The idea behind the deal was simple. He would confess to the crime and in return the death penalty would be taken off the table. The man who killed her agreed to a plea deal that will keep him in prison for the rest of his life February 2013, the case took an important legal turn.
37-year-old Donnie Jones Jr. pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of Megan Sharpton. That confession became a key moment in an investigation that had kept detectives, Megan’s family, and the entire local community on edge for a long time. After that decision, the court handed down a harsh sentence. Donnie Jones Jr.
was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. That meant he would spend the rest of his life behind bars. For Megan’s family, the decision carried a complicated meaning. On one hand, it brought a sense of justice. But on the other hand, um no sentence could ever bring back their daughter, their sister, the person they loved.
However, not long after the sentence was announced, the situation became complicated again. Donnie Jones Jr. filed a request to withdraw his guilty plea. He claimed that he had not agreed to it willingly. According to him, his attorney had pressured him into making that statement, and he also alleged that his wife had been threatened.
That claim quickly brought new attention back to the case and sparked another wave of discussion. For Megan’s family, it meant the painful events might return to the courtroom once again. Circuit Court Judge Curtis Smith reviewed the request. After examining the motion, he allowed a new filing to move forward, which temporarily opened the door to reconsider the situation.
But in the end, the original court decision remained unchanged. The original sentence was reinstated. Donnie Jones Jr. continued serving life in prison without the possibility of parole, and that is where he remains today. For Megan’s family, that ruling marked the final legal chapter of the case. But emotionally, the story never truly ended.
Megan’s sister, Kerry, later said, “If Megan hadn’t lost her life, I truly believe Donny Jones would still be out there trying to trick young women. Megan is the reason he’s behind bars for the rest of his life. In a way, she gave her life to protect everyone else in our community.” Sharpton, who endured unimaginable trauma after losing her daughter in such a painful and horrific way, spoke openly for a long time about the grief that stayed with her.
People who knew her said the loss hit her with a force she never truly recovered from. She often admitted that the pain felt overwhelming. It wasn’t the kind of pain that fades with time. It didn’t slowly get easier. Instead, it stayed with her every single day, a quiet but constant weight that followed her through every moment of life.
For a mother, losing a child is a tragedy that’s almost impossible to fully explain with words. And in Kelly’s case, the pain was even deeper because of how brutal and shocking Megan’s death had been. That reality stayed with her, never really allowing her to find peace. Friends and relatives later said that after the tragedy, Kelly’s life changed forever.
Even when she tried to stay strong and keep moving forward, the shadow of that loss was always there. It never disappeared, and it never became lighter. Tragically, this story had another heartbreaking chapter. In November 2013, Kelly Sharpton died by suicide. The news shocked everyone who knew the family.
For many people, it became another painful reminder of just how deep the consequences of such a tragedy can be. A tragedy that doesn’t just take one life, but can devastate an entire family. Officers who worked on the case later spoke many times about the deep sadness they felt over what happened to Megan.
Even for experienced investigators who had seen many tragedies during their careers, this case left a heavy mark. They often said that, in their opinion, the final minutes of Megan’s life were probably pure hell moments filled with panic, desperation, fear, and absolute terror. And honestly, that thought stayed with them for a long time.
Megan was a young woman with enormous potential. Her whole life was still ahead of her. She had dreams, plans, and hopes for the future, just like so many people her age. Friends and people who knew her remembered her as someone who was only just beginning to build her life, looking forward with excitement, and believing that many opportunities were still waiting for her.
But all of that was taken away far too soon. Her life was brutally and senselessly stolen. What happened shocked not only her family and friends, but also people who had never even met Megan. News of the tragedy spread quickly, leaving behind a deep sense of injustice. And together with the later loss of her mother, Kelly, the story became an even heavier blow for everyone who knew the family.
Two devastating losses within the same family left many people deeply shaken. For friends, relatives, and even strangers who followed the case, the story became a painful reminder of just how fragile life can be. Over time, a memorial was created in Megan’s honor. It is a 24-foot memorial marker placed at the exact location where she was found that morning.
A place that was once the scene of a terrible crime has now become a quiet space of remembrance. People sometimes stop there for a few minutes. They stand in silence, leave flowers, or simply take a moment to reflect on the life that was lost. The memorial includes 24 stars. Each star represents 1 year of Megan’s life.
A year that was lived, meaningful, but now forever part of the past. Those stars also carry a deeper meaning. They are a reference to the star tattoos Megan had. Tattoos that held a very personal significance for her and were an important part of who she was. That’s why the creators of the memorial chose this symbol as a way to preserve a small piece of her identity.
Her sister later said, “Family will always be grateful to the community for the support and dedication people showed while helping us get through such a difficult time.”
