A Locked-Room Mystery Unfolds: Seven Mummies Discovered in a Temple Basement — And One Missing Priest from a Year Ago

Hello.  In this episode, we’ll travel to Kumamoto Prefecture, a quiet corner of Japan.  There, behind the outward appearance of an old gang member, lay a secret that would send chills down your spine . Imagine this.  In a room that had been opened to the public, seven bodies were found seated in chairs.

And one of them belonged to a man who had disappeared exactly one year earlier .  This is the story of how the restoration of a sacred place  transformed into a chilling, ritualistic investigation that had been ongoing for centuries.   It all began in the fall of 2020.   Like other countries around the world, Japan was living under tandem restrictions .

In the small town nestled in the rural area of Kumamoto Prefecture, the world remained calm and peaceful, as always .  At the heart of this silence was Renji, an old Buddhist temple.   With a history spanning over 100 years, this club was the heart of the local community.  People visited this place seeking comfort, advice, or simply to enjoy the tranquility .

Among the monks on this committee was a man named Kazuo Hayashi.  He was 58 years old.  Hayashi was neither a skilled gunner nor a famous gunner .  He was a simple, quiet, and incredibly approachable man .  His entire life was dominated by the strict daily routines of his family .  From his morning duties of weathering, cleaning, assisting the head priest, and evening meditation, the neighbors and those below him knew him as a kind and helpful person who was always willing to help others .  He was an integral part of this place, just as essential as the

old stone pathways in the courtyard or the ancient, age-old rhomboid trees. His background was simple and straightforward.  I was born in Gin, and in my younger days I worked in an office, but after turning 35 I chose a path where I could be of real use .

I had no family, and no deep connections outside of work .  His world was immersed in the economy of the genus Rengeji.  One evening in October , Kazuo Hayashi disappeared.  It didn’t happen suddenly, nor was it accompanied by screams or fighting .  He disappeared .  The last person to see him was the head priest of the temple .

After their evening conversation, the two exchanged words .  Hayashi said that they needed to go down to the basement and check the old records concerning the member’s land .  This was not an unusual occurrence .  The basement of the member was a large, cluttered room that contained old ceremonial items, broken furniture, donation boxes, and documents that had remained untouched for decades .

It was a place where people rarely went, and only entered when necessary .  The head priest nodded and headed towards his large chamber .  No one had ever seen Kazuo Hayashi alive .  However, the only surveillance camera at the entrance to the room had been installed several years prior to a security theft.   The footage from this camera became the central and most unexplained element of the entire case.

The video footage, recorded at 12:00 PM, shows Hayashi calmly approaching the stairs leading to the basement, dressed in his usual work clothes .  I’m holding a small flashlight in my hand.  He didn’t look back , nor did he show any signs of worry.  He took a step forward and disappeared into the darkness of the stairs .  The camera is continuing to record.

One hour passed, then two hours, then three hours .  The bell rang in the middle of the night.  Hayashi will not appear .  The camera captured only an empty corridor and the dark entrance to the basement.  The following morning, when Hayashi did not show up for his morning duties, worries began to spread .  That was unthinkable.

In over 10 years of service, I have never once missed my morning courage .  The head priest and other monks began the search.  They checked his room.  Everything was exactly as it was .  The futon was neatly folded, and my personal belongings were untouched.  An open book was placed on the desk.

There was no indication that they had any plans to go out anywhere  .  They searched the entire premises of the member, examined all the buildings, and called out his name.   There was no reply.  Then they went down to the basement.  I investigated every house with a super sinker in hand .  The basement was as large and cluttered as ever.

It smelled of pride, old wood, and dampness.  They moved the box and looked behind the shelf.  There were no traces of a forest .  It was as if he and his cherished traditions had vanished into thin air .  When it became clear that the monk was definitely missing , the head priest reported it to the police .

The police officers who arrived at the scene first questioned everyone involved about what happened.  The story was short and simple.  He went down to the basement in the evening and never came back .  The crucial evidence was the surveillance camera footage.  The detectives saw it many times .  He’s in here.  And he doesn’t appear here.

Between these two moments lies an entire night.  No one else has been going in or out of the basement .  The police thoroughly searched the basement itself .  It was an old room with an earthen floor and walls partially covered in stone .  They cleaned all the walls , checked the ceiling, and inspected the floor.   There were no secret passages, hatches, or hidden doors .  The basement was constructed using a bag-type construction method.

The only entrance and exit were the stairs, which were captured on camera .  The operation came to a standstill almost immediately. Kidnapping.  But who, and more importantly, how, could have abducted him from a locked room without being caught on camera, if he had left voluntarily, but why? Why did he go down to the basement and disappear? His financial situation was normal, he had no enemies, he was not a member of any cult, and he never expressed any strange ideas.

He was a completely normal person.  The police brought in search and investigation equipment.  The dogs definitely tracked the scent of the woods from his room, went down the stairs to the basement, circled the room, and then stopped.  The traces ended in the middle of the basement .

It didn’t lead to any wall .  They had simply disappeared. This detail even surprised the most experienced dog trainers .  Several weeks have passed .  The search expanded into the surrounding forests and mountains .  However, there was no clue whatsoever indicating that Hayashi had left the temple grounds  .

The incident gradually became one of the mysteries buried in the police archives .  The residents spoke of the mysterious disappearances .  This is an abduction by God or by some legend .  In the rational 21st century, this theory sounded utterly nonsensical, but no one could explain what else happened.  A man entered a room with no windows and only one door, and then vanished without a trace.

The centipede continued its activity, but a shadow hung over it .  However, processing the chamber has now become a cause for concern .  The empty corridor captured on surveillance camera footage became a silent witness to an inexplicable event.  A year has passed in this state of uncertainty and deep despair.  The case of Lin He, the Chief of the Department of Works, was shelved, and there was little hope that he would ever be found alive  .

Then the planned restoration work on the member began.  Unaware of the story’s background, the workers had to begin repairs from the foundation and the basement rooms .  No one could have imagined that their work would reveal a truth far more terrifying than any speculation .  And so a year passed.  Time even reveals the sharpest mysteries .

The case involving Kazuo Hayashi remains unsolved and has become part of the local community’s social hierarchy. Life in the lower house returned to normal, but a bitter feeling lingered.  However, old buildings require maintenance, and the long-planned personnel restoration could no longer wait .  Funds were allocated, and a construction company in Kumamoto was hired.

They were experts with experience working in many historical buildings .  Their task was to reinforce the foundation, recover the overloaded support structure , and carry out preservation work so that the crew could continue to stand for another term.  The workers  arrived in quick succession, exactly one year after their mysterious disappearance in 2021. They knew nothing about the missing monk .

For them, it was just another job.  Their work began in the basement, which formed the foundation of the building. Led by an experienced site supervisor, a team of five descended into the basement.  They set up makeshift lighting, and dim lamps illuminated piles of junk and dusty shelves. For them, it was a familiar sight.

For the first few days, they cleared the place, removed the old crises , and prepared the walls for inspection .  At that moment, one of the young workers was checking the strength of the stone when he noticed something strange .  The police had previously searched the back wall of the basement, but  something seemed odd because it was partially hidden in an old shelf that had been left in its original place.

He spit out stones with his hammer.  The sound was dull and harsh.  However, the sound changed earlier, at a point 75cm away.  It has a hollow interior and has become metallic.  The workers called for the site supervisor.  The site supervisor was an older, experienced construction worker, but even he hit a wall .

He quickly realized that there was a hollow charging tribe behind the stone .  Upon closer inspection, I noticed something that no one had noticed before .  A thin, almost perfect vertical line, covered in centuries of grime and cloud cover .  That line looked like it was drawn from the population .  The site supervisor instructed the workers to carefully clean the area .

Using brushes and scrapers, they removed the old layers of dirt and grime.  And beneath it appeared something that shouldn’t have been there .  It was a smooth, dark metallic surface.   It was n’t just a board; it was a door.  It was huge and completely harmless and without any holes .  But the strangest thing was the surroundings. Hot welding marks ran along the entire circumference of the door .

Someone had not only closed this door, but had also welded it shut, completely blocking the passageway .  The site supervisor immediately stopped all work and went to see the temple’s chief priest .  He explained the situation and showed the findings.   The head priest, who had served in the service for over 40 years, was shocked by this development.  However, I didn’t know there was a second room in the building.

There was no  mention of it anywhere in Lin’s blueprints or documents.  He went down to the basement with the site supervisor. Seeing the welded door sent chills down my spine. Memories of Hayashi, which had vanished a year ago, have come flooding back .

With trembling hands, he took out his cell phone and called the police again.  This time, it was n’t about missing persons. This time, a secret that had been sealed away in quiet contemplation was discovered.  The police responded immediately .  The detectives who investigated Hayashi’s case a year ago have returned to the police force.  The sight of a welded door that no one had ever seen before.

The traces of the monk were found in that very basement, and it gave me a new perspective on the entire case .  This no longer looked like an accident or a voluntary departure .  I sensed something even more ominous .  It was decided to break down the door .  Special equipment, including a powerful metal cutter, was brought to the site.

The task took several hours .  The basement was filled with the pungent smell of burning metal and the ear-splitting shrieks of cutting discs .  Sparks flew from the gunfire, illuminating the tense faces of the police, construction workers, and Buddhist priests who stood frozen in place .

The tension rose as the cutter moved on to the next section .  What lies beyond that door? When the final cut was finished, the workers used crowbars to remove the heavy metal plate from the wall with great effort.  Air flowed into the gap.  It was the air coming from a sealed room.  It wasn’t the kind of bad practice one might expect from a tomb .   It was dry, so dry it was almost rotten, and  smelled of old wood and something else, like herbs or high-quality herbs, without any hint of tiger brood .

One of the police officers pointed a powerful pocketed weapon at the dark, open work area.  The silence that followed the quietness of the cutting tools became absolute .  No one said a word.  The high-speed beam of the flashlight captured a silhouette in the darkness .  And beyond yet another door was a small, empty room with bare stone walls . Seven simple wooden chairs were lined up in a row along the back wall, facing the entrance .

And someone was sitting in each of them .  It was in the form of seven humans.  They sat upright, hands on their knees, in a posture of absolute silence.  They were wearing old, colorful kimonos from various eras .  Time had transformed the dough into a brittle, almost mouth-watering material.  But that wasn’t the most terrifying thing.

Their very form was not a skeleton .  They were mummies.  The skin, so dry it resembled that of a sun-skinned corpse,  tightly covered the bone.  Their faces had   transformed into frozen masks, with sunken eyes and mouths slightly parted like silent sighs.  It was a scene from a forgotten nightmare, from another world.  The police officers, who had seen many such incidents, froze in place .

The head priest covered his mouth with his hand and his eyes wide with terror.  The detective slowly  moved the flashlight along the row of seated mummies.  First one, second one, third one .  They all seemed shrouded in ancient pride spanning generations .  Land-based confrontation.  However, the seventh figure sitting on the bridge looked different.  The kimono wasn’t in such tatters .

His physical condition looked terrifyingly different .  It’s not that old.  The detective stepped inside and shone a light directly onto the face of the seventh mummy .  The skin was firm and, despite the distorted features caused by dryness, was still clearly recognizable.  The head priest let out a quiet, choked, hushed cry .  He recognized the man. Despite the terrifying changes.

That was Kazuo Hayashi’s face .  The missing monk has been found.  He was sitting here.  In this secret room, along with the bodies of six other people.  And they had become one .  The search is over. However, the most terrifying question has just been raised .  What happened here?  The room was immediately sealed off.

Renkaji Temple has  transformed from a pilgrimage site into the center of one of the strangest and most terrifying investigations in modern Japan.   A team of legal experts from Kei Kumamoto has arrived at the scene .  They were people accustomed to death , yet they were still unprepared for what they saw .

The specialists, clad in white protective suits,  looked like ghosts in the dim light of makeshift lamps as they cautiously entered the sealed room .  Their work required an extremely high level of precision.  Each breath, each action,   had the potential to destroy the minute evidence that had been preserved in an airless environment for over a century.

First, they performed a ritual with air samples .  Analysis revealed that humidity was almost completely absent and the levels of heterogeneous substances were extremely low .  Essentially, it was the natural, near-natural quality.  These conditions of dryness and recent absence resulted in a natural appearance for the body, halting the decomposition process .

Furthermore, traces of rare herbs and minerals were discovered in the air. These were two types of cloth protectors that had been traditionally used in Japan for protective treatment and preservation, but were thought to have been lost for a long time .  Someone had intentionally created ideal conditions here in Date for preserving the body .

Then the work of bringing the mummy itself closer to the roots began.  Each person was carefully photographed from various angles .  Body position, clothing condition, and the position of each individual garment were recorded .  Then, with incredible care, each body was removed from the chair and packed into special containers for transport to the laboratory .  It was a precise job.

One wrong move could have turned the fragile mummy into dust . Special attention was paid to the wrists and the back of the neck.  Expert analysis confirmed that these were left behind after being tied with rope .  The pressure on the dry skin was clear.  Some of the bodies even had tiny fibers left over from the ropes .

All seven figures, including Hayashi-o, were tied to chairs .  This was not a spontaneous self-success in a meditation pose. It was a violently fast ride. After the body was removed, experts turned their attention to the room itself .  The chair where the mummy sat is dark.  It was made almost entirely of dark wood and was old but simple.

Those were also sent for analysis .  The walls and floor were carefully examined .  There was no inscription, no symbol, and nothing to reveal what had happened .  It was simply a death chamber , functional and unadorned.   The focus of the investigation was, of course, the body of Kazuo Hayashi .

His condition was remarkably different from that of others .  His body was presentable, but not as perfect as that of the family .  Legal experts were able to conduct a more detailed analysis .  The results were shocking .  First, the time of death was determined using the system that was most accurate .  Approximately 51 to 52 weeks ago.  This coincided precisely with the day he lost his race.

Next, let’s look at the cause of death.  No signs of fatal exocompensation were found in his body .  There were no fractures, no punctures, and no poisoning in the usual sense .  However, toxicological analysis  revealed traces of a plant-derived, non-lethal life-sustaining agent in his tissues. This substance could induce a deep sleep or coma for hours , but it could not kill .

The chef’s final diagnosis was frighteningly simple.  The cause of death was dehydration .  Kazuo Hayashi was alive when he was tied to the chair in this room .  He was subdued, brought here, locked up, and left to meet a slow death in complete darkness .  He died a few days later , and the unique holo-mechanism of the sealed room did the rest, turning his body into a mummy .

Simultaneously, work was underway to identify and date the other six bodies. This was the job of historians and anthropologists.  Using radiocarbon dating of tissue samples, bones, and clothing fragments, they were able to determine the approximate age of the nuclear mummy .

And the result was a truly terrifying picture .  The oldest mummy belonged to a man who died at the end of the 19th century, during the late Meiji era .  Another one died around 1920 during the period in question .  Furthermore, two of the figures date back to the pre-war Showa era, around 1930. Furthermore, the two bodies were relatively recent, and their deaths likely occurred in the 1960s and 1980s .

DNA analysis revealed that none of the six men were related to each other .  And none of them had any connection to Hayashi.  They were random, unrelated people.  An unbelievable, unimaginable sight unfolded before the investigators .  This was not a mass murder .  It was a continuous, repetitive ritual , something someone had been performing within the walls of Renge Time for at least 130 years.

With a terrifying regularity, once every 20 to 30 years , or even less frequently, someone would kidnap or lure someone, tie drugs to Yoya’s chair , seal them up, and leave them there to kill the victim. Decades later, the same person, or someone else, opened the room, added something new to the horrifying collection, and sealed the entrance once again.

That idea was so terrifying that it was impossible to comprehend .  Who could do that?  Did the members have a secret cult that no one knew about?  Was this terrifying tradition passed down as secret knowledge from one abbot to another?  The police repeatedly questioned the current head priest .

They subjected him to a lie detector test and investigated his background.  He was upright and honest.  His shock and fear were completely genuine .  Like everyone else, he was a victim of this nightmare .  Then the investigators dove headfirst into the officer’s record storage room.  They meticulously  examined all records, scrolls, and texts from the past 100 years.

I looked for strange teachings, missing employees, or any references to this secret room .  However, the archives remained silent.   The history of the RenGe era was clean and untainted .  The mystery only deepened.  The police now know how Hayashi died.   I also knew he wasn’t the first victim .

However, the main questions remained unresolved .  Who did it? Who carried the sleeping Hayashi to the basement, tied him to a chair, and then closed the door behind him?  This person, or perhaps a group of people, was still free.  He lived among ordinary people and knew about the existence of the room containing the seven mummies .

While the police were searching for the missing monk , he had a peaceful year last year .  And now his secret has been revealed .  He was hiding at the time.  The operation has entered a new phase.  From historical mysteries.  That turned into an active search for the murderer.   The  investigation into a murderer far older than anyone could have imagined had reached a dead end, facing a mystery spanning a century .

Nevertheless, I had to work in the present day .  A terrifying tradition that lasted for over a century needed a staunch protector .  The police began their work based on the most logical, and at the same time most terrifying, hypothesis: whoever closed the door behind Kazuo Hayashi.  The master was  one of those who lived in the area or had regular access to it.

The current head priest was beyond doubt, but the members included other generalists, freelance workers, suppliers, and individuals who had been part of this closed world for many years .  The detectives started over from the beginning, re-examining every detail that had seemed unimportant a year earlier  .

They reviewed the surveillance camera footage again .  We questioned everyone who spoke with Hayashi that day again.  And then one detail that had previously slipped their attention suddenly came to light .  One of the apprentices recalled overhearing a break in a conversation between Lin and another monk a few hours before his disappearance .  He was the oldest monk among the members of the Sato A group.

He was 89 years old.  Sato Aita was a living legend of Renkaji Temple .  He came to the club as a boy before the war and spent his entire life there.  For the past 20 years, he had been officially retired and relieved of all duties due to health reasons .  He lived in a small room deep within his heart, never showing himself to the public, and spent his days in meditation and tending to his small garden .

Everyone thought of him as a quiet, unassuming old man, someone who seemed to have one foot in the door.  A year ago, none of the police officers seemed to care about questioning him seriously again .  What could this bloated, hunched-over man possibly know , and what could he possibly accomplish?  However, the apprentice   remembered that that same evening he had told Sato he would help organize some old work records in the basement.

This  contradicted what the head priest had said about Hayashi going to check the land documents.  This was the first disagreement.  The second point was also raised by a legal expert .  Analysis of the door’s welding  revealed that it was made with a simple but powerful welding machine.  It was n’t factory work.

Police began investigating whether the officer or someone in the vicinity had purchased such a device .  And they found it.  Ten years ago, we purchased a welding machine for maintenance purposes.   This is for repairing the fence and reinforcing the shelves.   The purchase was made by Sato A., and at the time he was officially in charge of all maintenance and management .

The machinery, along with the tools, was stored in an old, dilapidated shed. Only one person had the key to the cabin.  My name is Sato Aita.  The detectives came into his room .  The old man was sitting on the tatami mat, tidying up .  He greeted them calmly and without surprise .  As if he had anticipated this visit , he listened to their questions, his eyes empty and vacant, staring intently at a single point .  He denied everything.

I barely remembered anything about Hayashi.  I didn’t know anything about any of the doors.  He was just an old, sick man.  However, when they presented the evidence, it included the apprentice’s testimony, documents detailing the purchase of a welding machine, and traces of those precious herbs found in his room and garden.

He remained silent.  A long silence hung in the small room.  And then he began to speak.  Calmly , in the Heisei era, without emotion, he began his own story .  He said that there were always two lineages of succession during the Ren-Ge era .  One was a  lineage of priests who dealt with official, spiritual matters.

The second was a secret lineage, the lineage of the Guardians of Peace.  This duty is not passed down from one head priest to another, but rather from one caretaker to another.  It was passed down from someone who knew the intentions of all the members. Sato Eta took over this position from the previous holder about 60 years ago .

This monk, like him, was a quiet and unassuming person.  He showed me the sealed room, explained its purpose , and handed me an old, half-opened diary containing records of those who had been put to sleep peacefully. This was not part of the Buddha’s teachings .

It was a distorted and fragmented tradition based on the idea that it was a spontaneous act of the Soklou people . But everything was different here.   The guardian himself chose something unsuitable for eternal darkness .  They were not great personifications, but rather, in his words, lost souls.  Wanderers: People without families or roots.

They were the kind of people whose disappearance went unnoticed by everyone .  He lured them in to find him, put them to sleep with herbs, and performed a ritual.  He did it twice in his life .  Once in the 60s, and again in the 80s, he opened the door, found a new seat , and sealed it again.  Hayashi Kazu was not a lost soul .  His misfortune lay in his curiosity and his close relationship with others.

While organizing old records , he stumbled upon a century-old floor plan of a basement that showed a secret room .  He praised Sato for the floor plan and asked for an explanation .  At that moment, the Oita administrator realized that the secret he had kept his entire life was in danger .  He saw it as a sign .  We had to uphold tradition.

That same evening, he invited Hayashi to the basement and said he would explain everything.  He offered him tea .  And when Hayashi fell asleep , the frail So, after many years, found the strength to finish his work .  He tied him to the seventh chair and took him outside to use the welding machine for the last time in his life .

Sato Aita’s trial became a major topic of discussion.  He displayed the same calm and composed demeanor in court.  They showed no remorse and did not ask for forgiveness .  He truly believed he had fulfilled his sacred duty, a duty he could not betray .  He was diagnosed with a psychiatric condition, but due to his age and health, he was imprisoned , where he died a year and a half later .

Rengeji was unable to overcome the scandal .  It was not peace , but an eternal bond to a room of terror .  Those guys from the lower ranks stopped coming there. Ultimately, the Buddhist community decided to completely shut it down .  The old gate was closed, and this time it was closed forever.  Thus, a century-long history of secret rituals came to an end .  The mystery has been solved.

However, Ando also refused to reveal the truth.  It    left only the chilling realization that the most terrifying secrets were passed down orally from one person to another in quiet, sacred places, not by the cursed landlords for decades.
