God sends certain people to carry out specific tasks, even when it comes to interfering in the lives of others. That mission might be seen as a boon or a bane; you have no idea who is helping whom. Having a kind yet strong heart that can support us and others through the most trying times is crucial when completing the missions that life has set for us.
In a chilly European town, Chantel worked as a nurse. She was an older woman, about 37. By happenstance, she and her spouse Johan, a like-minded physician, had chosen to forgo having children and instead focus on spending quality time together. She was a reserved, meticulous woman who took great pride in her profession.
Her work as a nurse had exposed her to the cruel aspects of life. She had experienced the most trying settings, including oncology, senior medicine, trauma, critical care, and more. But Pediatrics was, without a doubt, the most difficult field and the one she respected the most. Ironically, she thought that this was the area where she could most effectively aid others, even though she had never suffered as much as she did there.
She would occasionally feel like hitting parents who would wind up in the hospital with their kids, because it felt like they had no idea how to care for a newborn or a youngster. At other times, she discreetly showed respect for mothers who sacrificed all for their kids and just offered guidance on how to help them heal more quickly. Despite working in Pediatrics, she occasionally offered assistance to nurses who were called in for emergencies.
That was precisely the situation on a chilly winter’s evening when she got the call asking for help with a delivery. She hurried to the delivery ward without pausing to consider her options. She was told there that the baby’s mother was a young woman who had come by herself without family and had given her permission for the child to be placed for adoption. She was also told that the baby had an uncommon ailment that prevented him from having eyes.
Chantel was startled for a second, but then she heard the mother yelling, and she became vigilant. They made it to the delivery without any problems. After cleaning the infant, they put the mother in a room to allow her to heal. It was Chantel’s responsibility to bring the small, blanketed infant so the young lady could view him. With a skeptical demeanor, she asked whether she would want to carry him. With a broad smile, the woman said that indeed she did.
With tender words, she held him close to her chest. She assured him she would pray daily for a lovely family to adopt him and apologized for not being able to care for him.
“Do you give him up for adoption because of his condition?” inquired Chantel.
“Yes,” the woman replied, “but only because I lack the resources to properly care for him. He’ll require a lot of attention, and all I have is a job at a supermarket and no relatives. The moment the father found out I was expecting, he ran away. This life doesn’t belong to my baby.”
Chantel only nodded, acknowledging and appreciating her motivations. She then inquired as to whether she would like to name him.
“Yes, I would like to call him Angel,” to which Chantel retorted, “I think the name suits him very well.”
The young woman gave her baby one farewell cuddle. A little while later, after bidding the nurses farewell, she and a buddy departed the hospital.
After Angel was born, Chantel experienced an intense bond with him that she normally disliked because it implied suffering in the event that things didn’t work out well. She couldn’t help but spoil him every day and take care of him. She would visit Angel and spend time with him by taking walks around the hospital, even on her days off.
The infant’s sense of hearing had grown more than his lack of sight. In just a few weeks, he was able to identify the many nurse voices who attended to him during the day and was consistently more alert and cheerful when he was around Chantel. That just made Chantel love the little child even more, to the extent that she asked to take the night watch for Angel three times a week. Strangely, he appeared to behave better and experience fewer nighttime startles on those nights.
Because of his curiosity about Angel’s uncommon ailment, her husband Johan had asked to review the baby’s situation. He also began to warm up to the young child gradually, as he seemed to be naturally happy. He grinned when someone called him by name and enjoyed listening to music. He was even beginning to distinguish between voices and words earlier than most babies.
They started the adoption procedure for Angel when he was 3 months old, but there was not much hope. They didn’t think adoptive families would be eager to take in a child who required so much care. But in a matter of weeks, demands began to come in, even from abroad. The mere thought that Chantel might never see her tiny Angel again brought her to tears.
After a number of interviews, it was ultimately determined that the infant could only be adopted by a family who lived in the nation of origin in order to pursue the case further. Although Chantel was aware that the day would come to release Angel, she sincerely hoped it would never arrive.
But she did hear one spring afternoon that a prospective couple was interested in seeing Angel. Chantel escorted Angel to the interview room, feeling a little scared and depressed. The couple was thrilled to have the child and was quite open to the interview. Chantel desired to vanish and act as though her deepest fears would never materialize.
Her spouse comforted her by saying that she would see him, and that even if they adopted him, Angel would still need to go to the hospital for frequent exams. Furthermore, Johan was a member of the team of experts handling the issue, so they would stay in constant communication with the parents. She was terrified of being alone, even though she knew everything.
Days went by, but the pair never showed up again. The same thing happened to the other two chosen couples. They explained that after giving it some serious thought, they didn’t really feel like they could take care of Angel. This caused Chantel to be anxious since she would eventually lose the ability to care for Angel when he went to an orphanage, and she would also not know who his parents were.
Right away, one day when she was keeping watch, a friend told her, “Oh Chantel, what a pity you don’t dare to adopt Angel, because he prefers you, and no one knows how to take care of him like you.”
These adoption requests kept coming in. She had never considered that idea, so the comment was a revelation to her. The next day, very early and with a strong decision, she filled out an adoption application form and submitted it to the social worker who was managing the case. After expressing surprise and asking whether she was certain, Chantel said, “Never in my life have I been more confident.”
The weeks and days continued to pass, turning into three more arduous months. As Chantel and Johan persisted in their efforts to show Angel love every day, he began to show them more and more signs of affection in return. Finally, Chantel’s request was granted, and the interview process started right around the time that Angel’s transfer to an orphanage was being contemplated.
They all knew Chantel and knew of her fondness for Angel, so it was extremely interesting that it felt more like a meeting of colleagues. She said that she had been unintentionally waiting for Angel when others inquired why she had not had children of her own when she got married. After a few months, the procedure proceeded organically, and Chantel and Johan’s desire to begin the adoption process was granted.
They were now in the cohabitation phase. Johan and Chantel were content, more so than before. Since he’d been with Chantel every day, Angel had started to smile more. The most lovely part was that he did not burden her when she let down her guard to better tend to him. As Chantel took care of Angel, she felt content and joyful. She was fully aware that he would be a different child, but she felt that God had made this decision, so she did not want it to be any other way.
