Officer Found an Abandoned Baby in the Street, What He Did Next Made Millions Weep
Most police officers are unquestionably heroes despite the unfavorable press they frequently receive. Officer James Hurst
A policeman named James Hurst discovers an abandoned infant. How do you anticipate him acting? Bring it in without fail. This police officer then shocked everyone with what he did next. It wasn’t long after joining the police department that Officer James Hurst and his colleagues came upon this abandoned toddler left all by himself on the streets of Georgia. Following multiple reports of a 16-month-old infant walking the streets by himself, the team was promptly dispatched to Cuyler-Brownville in Savannah.
Thank goodness the police were able to apprehend the boy and take him immediately to the emergency hospital to make sure he didn’t require any medical care. This is where the issue surfaced. This little child was clearly overwhelmed by his new surroundings and the attention that accompanied them. Having had a rather adventurous existence, he soon began to fidget, twitch, and wail, making it challenging to examine him for any health issues.
Officer James Hurst stood up once more in this situation. Being a father of two, Officer Hurst knew just what to do to calm down yelling children. According to Officer Hurst’s account of the event, the boy, who was obviously very small, became very upset. He was screaming and wailing. “I asked the hospital personnel if I could attempt to calm him down so that they could continue to provide medical treatment, and they replied it was okay if I held him. I went to pick him up.”
“After a few minutes, he was sound asleep on my chest and I was on my feet. And while carrying this little infant, my body armor and pistol belt were really heavy. So, I made the decision to sit down on the bed to make things easier for both of us.” Even while this may not seem like much in the big picture, it demonstrates the wonderful character that Officer Hurst possesses.
He could have continued with his workday, leaving the youngster in the hands of the medical specialists, just like the other cops who brought the boy in. However, he couldn’t bring himself to leave the youngster while he was so upset, since he would have been devastated to see this little guy abandoned once more. Officer Hurst performed a modest but brave deed, and it was captured in a photo that instantly went viral on social media.
Following the nameless toddler’s swift swoon to sleep in Officer Hurst’s arms after evidently being starved of human connection, people all across the internet fell in love. Even though Officer Hurst doesn’t think his actions were heroic, everyone else does, and he has been commended ever since. “It’s what we do every single day. Not just me, but the 600 officers that are in this department,” was all he had left to say. Being a cop is not the only thing this job entails. Serving the people in the places you work in and attending to their needs is what it’s all about. I definitely think of Officer Hurst as a hero, even if he may not.
Officer Ryan Hollis
Similar to Officer James Hurst, this police officer was horrified to see the conditions this infant was in and fervently wanted to offer it some tiny solace. It all began when Albuquerque, New Mexico police officer Ryan Hollis got a report regarding a potential theft at a convenience shop. He left thinking the situation would be resolved quickly so he could go on with his day. That was obviously not the case at all.
His gaze settled on a couple leaning against a cement wall on September 23rd after he had defused the situation at the convenience store. It didn’t take him long to discover that a man and a woman were getting ready to inject heroin during the day. Ryan approached the pair and activated his body camera out of instinct. To his dismay, he discovered that the woman was obviously highly pregnant and that she was also putting the needle into her companion’s arm.
Ryan can be heard begging, “You’re going to kill your baby. Why must you be doing all of that? Your baby will be ruined by it.” The woman, eventually identified as 35-year-old Crystal Champ, first appeared confused and irritated by Ryan’s interruption, but as soon as she heard this, she started crying. She admitted to the police that she was addicted to drugs and was about 8 months pregnant. Subsequently, Crystal tragically revealed to a news organization that even though she supported abortion rights, she was never given the opportunity to get one. That’s why Officer Hollis’s remarks struck such a chord.
“I was like, ‘How dare you judge me,'” she remarked. “You’re not aware of how difficult this is. I am aware of the terrible person I am and the terrible circumstances I find myself in.” Champ had battled addiction since her teenage years, and it had been more than two years since she had been living in a tent when Officer Hollis discovered her. During that period, she developed a significant heroin and crystal meth addiction, spending up to $50 per day on narcotics. She detested not having any control over her life, and tried several times to change her ways, but she was unable to stay clean.
Officer Hollis may be seen interviewing Champ and the man for more than 10 minutes on the body camera. “Are you expecting a child? Why will you be engaging in such behavior?” You can hear him specifically talking to Champ and emphasizing the risks she was putting her child in. Officer Hollis was prompted to make a decision that would alter the course of his life when Champ broke her heart to him and said that she hoped someone would adopt the child.
He became a human being instead of a police officer, Champ recalls, noting that Hollis took out a photo rather than accuse them of possessing it. He introduced Champ to his wife and four kids. One of them was his 10-month-old infant. Officer Hollis made the spontaneous offer to adopt her child. Champ was completely taken aback, but Hollis clarified that he felt compelled to take a gamble by God. “God brought us all together,” he declared. “There’s really no other way for me to put it.”
Champ obviously agreed, but Hollis had to deal with the little issue of telling his wife, Rebecca. Luckily, Rebecca was just a few miles away, so he got in his vehicle and drove over to visit her. He told her right away about the infant he had promised to adopt and the heroin junkie he had just seen. Fortunately, this couple had already considered adopting a kid. They were only waiting for their youngest to be a little older. Rebecca immediately accepted, demonstrating that she has a heart as compassionate as Hollis’s. She said, “He already knew my heart on the issue, and he knew that I would be totally on board with it. He was correct, too.”
Next, on October 12th, Champ gave birth to a daughter, Hope, who was given the Hollis’s name. Champ saw her child for the last time a few days later. “You have my affection.” She turned to Rebecca and whispered, “Take care of her for me,” after bidding Hope farewell.
However, it didn’t end there. Hope underwent the arduous process of detoxification after becoming an opioid baby, which amazingly is born every 25 minutes in the United States. She even had to undergo therapy with methadone. She spent a few weeks in the hospital, but thankfully she recovered completely and could go home with the promise of weekly checkups.
Regarding Crystal, she was shortly contacted by a drug treatment center resident at Mending Fences who had overcome addiction. She was urged to quit the streets and go on one last trip to recovery in Florida after much convincing. Remarkably, she’s clean today and still keeps in contact with the Hollis family. In fact, she has called Ryan her big brother and uses his weekly phone conversations to obtain guidance on how to keep going. She really sleeps with a framed picture of the Hollis family over her bed because she believes they are all her guardian angels. The cherry on top is that Champ is always welcome to visit and be a part of Hope’s life at their house, provided she maintains her cleanliness. What a lovely way to cap off a hectic journey.
Officer Jeremy Thomas
Officer Jeremy Thomas extended a little gesture of compassion to a stranger by using his power to do so. Even though he didn’t take the extreme step of adopting a child, his assistance undoubtedly helped this homeless guy start a new life. The incident involving Officer Thomas and the homeless guy that went viral online a while back probably caught everyone off guard.
Officer Thomas, a Detroit police officer, came across a homeless guy who was having difficulty shaving back on September 11th, 2019. It wasn’t going too well, unfortunately. He was having trouble holding the razor steady enough to cut cleanly, and he was rinsing it in the puddle on the road next to him. Officer Thomas noticed this and realized he had to assist, so he went over to give him a solid hand right away.
If Jill Mativea Schaefer and her family had not already been waiting nearby in Comerica Park, this modest act of bravery probably would have gone unreported. When they saw the kind deed, it was after the Detroit Tigers game had been rained out and they were regrouping. Jill was the first to see the conversation between Stanley Nelson and Officer Thomas. And she was so taken aback that she had to take a few pictures.
She quickly shared it on Facebook with the comment, “What a fantastic Detroit police officer. To help this man shave, this cop went above and beyond.” The picture quickly gained popularity as everyone was as astounded by the performance as Jill was. “I took the picture because I thought it was such a selfless, kind thing for an officer to do,” the woman stated. “I wanted to portray police officers in a favorable manner because of all the negative press they receive.”
She’s definitely correct in that regard. Nearly all police officers have recently received unfair treatment, especially from the media because of a sketchy group of people. Small gestures like this one undoubtedly emphasize the ideals of serving on the police force.
