But about a lesson.
“I learned something that night,” she would say. “Not about him. About myself.”
She would pause, just long enough for the weight of it to settle.
“We think we can tell who someone is just by looking at them. But most of the time… we’re not even close.”
And every time she said it, there would be that same silence.
Not uncomfortable.
Just honest.
Because everyone listening knew exactly what she meant.
And maybe, just maybe, the next time they saw someone in worn boots or simple clothes, they would hesitate before making a judgment.
They would look a little longer.
Listen a little more.
