Mom gives birth – then turns to dad and says, ‘I’m sorry’

Eliza broke down in tears the moment she heard her newborn daughter cry for the first time. The delivery had taken everything out of her. She was completely drained and still in disbelief that it was finally over. The nurse gently laid the baby on Eliza’s chest. For the first time, Eliza held her little girl close.

She looked around the room, suddenly realizing something. “Where’s Ben?” she asked, noticing her husband wasn’t there. Just then, Ben walked into the room. Eliza’s face went pale. She felt it right away. There was something she had to tell him. As he came closer, she reached out and held his hand. “I’m sorry,” she said softly.

She was still catching her breath after the tough labor, but the moment she saw Ben holding their newborn son, her heart filled with joy. And then quickly sank into a deep, uneasy feeling.

This should have been the happiest moment of her life. Finally becoming a mom, starting the life she had always dreamed about. But under all the happiness, Eliza felt heavy with guilt. She had gotten here by keeping something important from Ben. He looked down at their baby boy, smiling through tears.

“He looks just like me. I can’t believe it,” Ben said, clearly emotional.

Eliza’s stomach dropped. She knew right then she couldn’t hide the truth any longer. Tears filled Eliza’s eyes and her voice shook as she clutched Ben’s arm. “I need to tell you something. I’m so sorry,” she whispered.

Ben froze. His eyes widened in shock. “How could you, Eliza?” he said, barely able to process what he was hearing.

Eliza and Ben had always been a happy couple. They’d gotten married not long ago, full of hope and love. It felt like a dream come true. From the start, they both wanted to have a big family, something they’d each dreamed of since they were kids. A few months after the wedding, they started trying to have a baby.

They were excited about their future together and the life they were building at home, but things didn’t go as planned. Month after month passed and nothing changed. Eliza wasn’t getting pregnant. They knew it could take time, but after two long years, they started to feel worried. They’d always believed having kids would be easy, something that would just happen.

When it didn’t, reality hit hard. Hoping for answers, they decided to see a doctor to figure out what was going on. Was something wrong or was it just bad timing? The day of the appointment came and both of them felt hopeful. Maybe they’d finally get some reassurance, but the news they got was hard to hear. After running tests on both Eliza and Ben, the doctors came back with the results that shook them.

They said Ben was most likely sterile and suggested the couple consider other ways to start their family. Ben and Eliza were heartbroken when they got the news. The doctors explained their options and told them to take some time to think about what might work best for them. Adoption was one of the first ideas that came up, especially since a friend of Eliza’s had recently adopted two boys.

Ben saw the positives in it, but Eliza wasn’t too sure. She knew she could still carry a baby and had her heart set on having a biological child. After weeks of talking it through, they eventually agreed that using a sperm donor was the right path. But deep down, it was more Eliza’s decision than Ben’s. For Ben, letting go of the dream of having a child that was biologically his was tough.

He had always pictured it differently. Still, he loved Eliza and knew it wouldn’t be fair to take that experience away from her. Especially if she still had the chance to carry their child. Finding a sperm donor can go fast or take a while depending on a lot of things. Together, they went through the list and picked out the traits they wanted.

Ben had planned to send the final request himself, but Eliza had already done it one afternoon while he was at work. He thought it was a little strange, but didn’t make a big deal out of it. He was just excited about the possibility of becoming a dad. Since Eliza had handled most of the communication with the sperm bank, Ben had to rely on her for updates.

He often asked her what was taking so long. Eliza kept telling him it was all under control and that there was nothing to worry about. Though his nerves were building, Ben chose to believe her and tried not to overthink it. A few weeks later, the donor was finally selected and the couple even went out to celebrate. Ben was really curious to know what the donor looked like, but the staff at the sperm bank said they couldn’t share that information.

What surprised him most was how calm Eliza seemed. This was going to be their future child. How could she be so relaxed and not need to know everything? Still, Ben told himself he had to trust her. He didn’t want to make things harder by piling on doubts. Maybe her confidence was a good thing. Maybe it would all turn out fine.

They waited a few more weeks before taking a pregnancy test, wanting to give it the best chance of showing a clear result. Both of them felt nervous, not knowing what to expect. Thankfully, the pregnancy test came back positive. Ben and Eliza were over the moon. The journey had drained most of their savings, so hearing good news without having to start the process all over again felt like a huge relief.

Still, they needed confirmation from a doctor. They booked an appointment and during the visit, the doctor confirmed that Eliza was definitely pregnant. As the weeks went on, Eliza’s excitement grew. She couldn’t wait to welcome their baby into the world. But Ben felt differently. He still had doubts. What if things changed as the baby got older? What if he struggled to feel a real connection? These worries kept piling up in his mind and soon they became too much.

That’s when Ben made some unexpected choices. Month by month, his concerns only got worse. He started to lose focus on what truly mattered. Spending time with Eliza became harder for him and he often felt distant and pushed aside. Then one day, he made a decision that would create even more space between him, Eliza, and their future child.

Ben decided he needed to find the sperm donor. He thought meeting the person might give him peace of mind. Maybe help him stop wondering who their child might turn out to be. The idea quickly took over his thoughts. Using the little information they had received during the donor selection, Ben began doing his own research without telling Eliza.

He knew she wouldn’t be okay with it. After weeks of searching on his own and coming up with nothing, Ben chose to go directly to the sperm bank for more answers. But the staff told him they couldn’t share any details. They had strict rules and the donor’s identity was completely confidential. Still, Ben didn’t give up.

If anything, being told no only made him more determined to find out. As the due date got closer, Ben’s obsession finally began to fade. Eliza was now well into her third trimester and he realized his focus needed to shift. Taking care of her and preparing for their child mattered more than trying to control what he couldn’t change.

But then something unexpected happened. Eliza’s health started to decline in the final months of her pregnancy. She became weak and lost a noticeable amount of weight. The doctors told Ben her condition was serious. If things didn’t improve, both she and the baby could be at risk. Eliza needed full-time care.

Ben did everything he could. He stayed home as much as possible and made sure she got admitted to the hospital in time. He stayed by her side every step of the way right up until the day she gave birth. It was a tough and emotional time for both of them. Eliza had to really pace herself to save her energy and avoid making her condition worse.

And for a while, it seemed to help. But was that truly the end of their troubles? Even though she went into labor a little early at 8 and 1/2 months, the doctors were pleased she made it that far without getting seriously ill. Ben felt relieved, though he was still nervous. He knew childbirth could be risky for Eliza, given how weak she’d become.

At that point, all he could do was wait and hope everything went smoothly. Ben sat in the waiting room, full of worry, just wanting to hear something from the doctors. In the end, they had to perform a C-section. After nearly two long hours, a doctor finally came out to speak with him. He told Ben that Eliza was okay and the surgery had gone well.

But she needed complete rest. So Ben wouldn’t be able to see her right away. That hit Ben hard. All he wanted was to see her and know she was truly okay. Sensing how down he was, the doctor said they could at least give him a small moment of joy. The nurse was about to take the baby for the first exams, but they’d make a quick stop so Ben could hold the baby.

As soon as the nurse handed him the child, Ben’s face lit up. He held the baby gently, just as the nurse instructed. He still didn’t know if the baby was a boy or a girl. He and Eliza had planned to find out together, but in that moment none of that mattered. He was just grateful to hold his baby. The baby was calm and Ben was instantly smitten.

He couldn’t take his eyes off him. Then without meaning to, the doctor let it slip. He casually mentioned that the baby was a boy. Ben paused for a second overwhelmed by everything he was feeling. And suddenly none of the old fears mattered anymore. He didn’t care that the child wasn’t biologically his.

The baby in his arms was his son. And Ben already loved him with his whole heart. To Ben’s surprise, the baby actually looked a lot like him. He and Eliza had picked donor traits to match his as closely as possible, but he never thought it would turn out this close. The baby was then taken for routine checks.

And Ben followed the medical team, watching through the window to keep an eye on him. Right after, he hurried to Eliza’s room excited to share this special moment. But when he walked in, he froze. His older brother was already there. Ben frowned, confused. Did Eliza call his brother to share the news? And how had he gotten there before Ben? The whole room felt off.

Something in the air wasn’t right. His brother couldn’t even meet his eyes and Eliza sat there with tears running down her cheeks. Ben could feel it in his gut. There was something he hadn’t been told. He looked at both of them.

“What’s going on?” he asked firmly.

Eliza wiped her tears and said quietly, “I’m sorry. I wanted to tell you sooner, but I just couldn’t.”

Ben was trying hard to stay calm. “Tell me what?” he asked, his voice tight.

Then his brother Joshua stepped in and explained. Eliza had never actually submitted a donor preference form. She had wanted a child with Ben so badly that she thought of the closest option: his brother. She had gone to Joshua and asked him to be the donor.

Joshua had needed a lot of convincing, but eventually, he agreed. He saw how much it meant to Eliza. That’s why the process had taken so long. They both knew Ben would never say yes to something like this. So they kept it from him. Eliza had been terrified Ben would be furious if he ever found out. But what happened next shocked both of them.

Ben didn’t get angry. In fact, he felt something totally unexpected: peace. Sure, he wouldn’t have agreed to it if they’d asked him back then, but now after holding that baby and knowing there was still some of his own family’s blood in the child, it felt right. He wasn’t upset anymore. He was just happy.

From that point on, Joshua stayed involved as Uncle Josh. He never overstepped and it worked for everyone. Ben and Eliza named their son Josh in his honor. And the three of them—Ben, Eliza, and baby Josh—settled into a happy life. They cherish every moment they get to raise their son. Somehow everything turned out just the way it was meant to.
