TODAY co-hosts Jenna Bush Hager and Carson Daly got into it today on live TV after a very famous ex was brought into the coversation.
Carson, 52, filled in for Jenna’s usual co-host Sheinelle Jones on Today‘s fourth hour Monday morning, and the exchange got a little spicier than usual.
In a conversation about parenting, Jenna, 44, insisted she was not a very rebellious child, which led Carson to snicker in disbelief.
“We all know, we read about it! We know!” he said, clearly referring to Jenna’s two 2001 citations for alcohol-related offenses in Texas.
“You don’t want to go into what we read about you!” Jenna snapped back.
“We love to harass Carson about his ex-girlfriends…We love to sing, ‘your body is a wonderland,’” she said, singing the lyrics of John Mayer’s song reportedly about Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Carson and Jennifer dated for about a year in the late 90s. The Total Request Live host also famously dated American Pie actress Tara Reid, and had a reputation as a ladies’ man – but is now married to Siri Pinter and has four kids.
“You know I’m 52! It’s been a minute. It’s been a long time,” Carson said, exasperated.
“Since any of that old MTV stuff. That old pop culture references. I know its nostalgia, everything’s back again!”
“At the same time, when you just mentioned I had my mugshot, we’re even!” Jenna countered.
The exchange appeared to be in good fun, but some viewers didn’t take it that way.
“Hilarious they stuck Carson and Jenna together. Two people who clearly cannot stand each other,” one Reddit commenter said.
“Yikes. They are being just brutal towards each other today. Bringing up each other’s pasts,” said another.
Others insisted it was all in jest.
“They come across as brother and sister and pick on each other light-heartedly,” another chimed in.
Off camera, Jenna and Carson have said their families are friends, and their children often hang out together.
If it unclear if Carson is planning to fill in for Sheinelle the rest of the week, but if he does, viewers can expect more fiery exchanges.
