BREAKING NEWS: ‘He’s Been Through Hell’: Coach Prime Openly Discusses Shedeur Sanders’ Scars, ‘Smear Campaign,’ and Year 2 Outlook with Cleveland Browns!

CLEVELAND — In a raw, emotionally charged appearance on The Barbershop with Garrett Bush, Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders pulled back the curtain on the turbulent path his son, Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, has endured. Speaking candidly about the pre-draft criticism, locker room dynamics, and structural shifts under new Browns head coach Todd Monken, the elder Sanders made one thing clear: the physical and emotional toll has only forged a stronger leader.

“When he takes off his shirt, I see the scars on his back that he’s been through hell, but he’s made it through hell,” Deion Sanders remarked during the broadcast. “He kept going, and he matured—not like he was a child, but he matured spiritually.”

The sweeping interview addresses the ongoing national media narrative surrounding the 24-year-old signal-caller, who is currently adjusting to mandatory offseason programs and preparing for an intense positional battle in Cleveland.

The Anarchy of the Pre-Draft Slide

Just over a year ago, Shedeur Sanders was widely evaluated as a potential top-five selection after setting numerous school records at Colorado, including throwing for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns in his senior campaign. Yet, when draft night arrived, a dramatic slide ensued, culminating in Cleveland selecting him in the fifth round.

Coach Prime directly addressed what he viewed as an orchestrated “smear campaign” during that pre-draft process. Anonymous team reports circulated at the time, claiming the Colorado standout was “standoffish,” wore headphones into critical meetings, and struggled to execute complex whiteboard schematic drills.

“A lot of what was said and written behind the scenes frustrated me as a father,” Deion admitted. Critics focused heavily on tape showing Shedeur drifting in the pocket or trusting his arm to a fault in tight coverage windows. However, the drop to the fifth round shocked many across the league, particularly after the Browns had already drafted former Oklahoma and Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel two rounds prior.

Instead of allowing the slide to break him, Coach Prime insists the adversity provided his son with necessary armor.

Reflecting on a Trial-by-Fire Rookie Campaign

Shedeur’s rookie season in Cleveland was anything but stable. Entering the year deep on the depth chart behind fellow rookie Gabriel and veteran Joe Flacco, he had to wait for his opportunity. When injuries and depth-chart shaking finally forced him onto the gridiron, the numbers reflected a typical rookie learning curve under immense pressure:

Statistic 2025 Rookie Season Production
Games Started 7 (Finished with a 3-4 record)
Passing Yards 1,400
Touchdowns 7
Interceptions 10
Passer Rating 68.12

Despite the statistical struggles, there were undeniable flashes of brilliance—most notably a high-scoring shootout victory against the Tennessee Titans and rookie quarterback Cam Ward.

New Number, New Structure under Todd Monken

As the Browns transition into 2026 Organized Team Activities (OTAs) at the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus, significant changes are underway. The team announced that Shedeur is shifting from the No. 12 jersey he wore as a rookie—a nod to his mentor Tom Brady—back to his signature No. 2, which he wore at Jackson State and Colorado.

More importantly, the offensive infrastructure has shifted entirely. With Todd Monken taking over the head coaching duties, the environment inside the building has changed dramatically, a shift that Coach Prime highly praises.
