At the age of 19, Angela Simmons was a stunning young woman who cherished life and her youth. She was the life of every party and had a big circle of friends. She would go out to clubs most evenings and dance till the wee hours of the morning. Her parents were quite controlling and had not given her this kind of independence, so she had not really begun to appreciate this lifestyle until she moved into her own apartment.

Angela had no intention of living this way indefinitely. All she wanted was to live life to the fullest while still young and to look back on her life with no regrets. She was curious about what it was like to live life to the fullest and then settle down and assume grown-up responsibilities. She would frequently purchase a few drinks at the clubs to try out different flavors and mixes, and she would typically return home really tipsy. She always made the most of her nights out and understood when to quit before she became sick.

Richard was one of the guys she was friendly with. After a night of partying, he was the one who always made sure Angela got home safely. He was more reserved; although he was aware that the stunning and adventurous girl was not seeking a committed relationship at the moment, he still had feelings for her in private. He was patiently waiting for her to get over this stage of her crazy life.

She warmed up to him a few months later and saw that he was indeed the kind person she had dreamed of. The two began dating just before she turned 21, since she wasn’t ready to settle down yet but wanted to explore a relationship with him. But then, she abruptly became unwell. She suffered from nausea all day long to the point where she was unable to go to work.

She went to the doctor, unsure of what may be producing this awful feeling. Angela was taken aback when he revealed she was expecting a child. This was not anticipated to occur; although she had taken precautions to avoid becoming a mother at such a young age, luck had not been on her side.

Despite the great difficulty, Angela chose to confide in her parents about the information. She was thinking about getting an abortion, but she didn’t want to make such a big choice by herself. Although she was aware of her parents’ traditional views about pregnancy, she also knew she could always rely on their love and support. Angela chose to stay in her own apartment because she still wanted to live her own life and make her own decisions, even if her parents urged her to return home.

Angela made the decision to notify Richard about her pregnancy, even though she wasn’t sure whether she wanted to live out the rest of her life with him. She clarified that although she wasn’t sure whether she wanted to retain the child, she would let him participate in the child’s upbringing if she did. She felt Richard would make a wonderful parent since he was a decent man.

A few days later, Angela made the decision to retain the child. She knew she had drunk a lot of alcohol before finding out she was pregnant, so she wanted to see a doctor as soon as possible. She was worried that her partying lifestyle might have harmed her unborn child. She couldn’t bring herself to tell her parents this information, though. Since Richard already knew the truth about her life throughout the previous several months, he was the only one she could confide in with her doubts and self-blame.

Angela knew she had to tell the doctor the truth when they saw each other for the second time. She wished to know if her heavy drinking had resulted in any birth problems. Thankfully, there were no obvious anomalies found by the doctor, but he did inform her that more testing would be necessary to confirm any findings. He also cautioned her that drinking too much alcohol in the first trimester may regrettably have a terrible effect on the unborn child.

Angela made a vow right then and there to abstain from alcohol until long after giving birth, and she followed through on it. There were many highs and lows in the months that followed. Angela felt a mixture of sadness and shock at her young life coming to an abrupt end. Her carefree years were expected to last for a few more years, but she realized she had to accept responsibility as a new life was now developing inside of her.

She was becoming used to this arrangement as well, especially with Richard moving in with her to support her. She was searching for someone with a bit more charisma since she didn’t think he would make the perfect spouse. But as time passed, she came to see that having a man at her side who had a more steady demeanor was beneficial. Though there were several difficulties during the pregnancy, the day of the baby’s birth was drawing near.

Following the results of an ultrasound, Angela opted to name her unborn child Emma. Since Richard had been a pillar of support for her throughout this trying time in her life, Angela wanted him to be there during the delivery. Emma was underweight when she was born, but other than that, everything appeared normal. After doing some preliminary testing, the physicians determined that the baby was in excellent health, allowing Angela to take her home right away.

Regretfully, Emma began to cry nonstop and touch her stomach all the time just a day later. It was Richard who initially saw that the newborn girl’s stomach appeared bloated. He insisted on taking the screaming infant and the fitfully crying Angela back to the hospital. The hospital trip was a very difficult one. Richard just wanted assistance for the woman he loved and the small child to whom he already had a strong attachment.

Many others were waiting in line for assistance when they arrived at the hospital, but when they heard the newborn’s cries, other patients didn’t mind that the parents had jumped ahead of them. Emma was sent to the emergency room right away so that her abdomen could be examined. It seemed like hours passed while they waited for the physicians to respond. Angela was kicking herself in the back of her thoughts: what if her drinking was the real reason behind her little girl’s illness?

The tests involved the doctor who had also verified her pregnancy. He would have known right away that she was an extreme drinker. Richard and Angela were required to wait in the adjoining room for the test procedure. Emma’s stomach appeared to be getting larger by the minute. She was obviously in a lot of agony, which Angela could barely bear to witness. She was tortured for 30 minutes before running out of the room and sobbing in the parking lot.

As she was ready to gather herself and head back into the hospital, she noticed her parents pulling in. It was Richard who had phoned them. Angela was happy to have the extra help, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that she could be at fault and that her parents would be disappointed in her. The moment the physicians returned with certain findings, Angela’s family was shocked to hear them. Emma was identified as having necrotizing enterocolitis, or NEC.

In this disorder, the baby’s colon tissue is killed by inflammation in the large intestine. Unfortunately, it affects a lot of babies and sometimes requires extensive surgery to treat. Premature births and low-birth-weight babies are particularly vulnerable to NEC. This might be a deadly condition if untreated. Emma was fortunate to have access to a pediatric surgeon who could remove the obstruction from her abdomen, give her IV fluids, and treat her illness with medications. Fortunately, the parents recognized the signs right away and sought assistance. Thankfully, Emma healed without requiring surgery.

The infant was allowed to return home with her parents following a few days of hospital care. Thankfully, there is a happy ending to this tale. Aside from her kid being healthy, Angela came to the realization that Richard was the finest thing that could have happened to her. Emma bore a striking resemblance to her father in appearance, including a comparable birthmark. Richard immediately responded with a resounding yes when Angela asked him if he would consider getting married a few months after the birth.
